This week we created an HTML stylesheet for us to create our website and share our work each week. The stylesheet is aim to understand how internet has been built from all kind of codes. It was the first week of getting in touch with this website-built program, so this is a quite challenge for me to get used to it. After I found a template for my website, I felt much less stressed. However, I am getting more comfortable with the codes as I keep updating my website.
On week 3 workshop, we had learned how to use different scraping tool to collect exactly data I need for my research. During the lesson I found that the WebScraper.io is more suitable for me to use, although I still feel very difficult to start at the first time. Here is my sample data that I collected from BBC iplayer.
We had narrow down the question to the library engagement that find out how many students used library system for certain things from 2018 to 2023. As we are going to use secondary resource to collect a data set, we used a Leeds library annual reports. To make our data to be machine readable, we chosen a variable and values example form to help with our final table.
Last week we had organised a dataset based our library annual reports. This week we are using our data source to form a visual chat. Excel is used in the workshop for creating bar chat, pie chat and liner chat. In this section, creating data visualisation graphs are easy to learn as I only need to click the graphic laboul.
This workshop is using AI technology to make a mdoel by input data. Although it is AI technology, we still need to trainning the computer for supervised results. We are using Teachable Machine platform to explore machine learning. As the images shown above, it is working for completely different class, but it cannot classify the classes if they has similar features. For example, the model cannot classify me and my classmate facial features and identify us as a same class. Base on this week's experience, I think the AI is not smart enough to replace human now, but it will get better one day as we keep training and developing in the future.
In this workshop, we had look at the interrogating algorithms inside of systems that relate on the identity. I looked at the algorithm in the Instagram and thinking about the data I shared, including likes, comments, tags and location. These input data are expectable, but other data may secretly collected by platform without anyone know. We also select Google personalise advertising as the output data example. What was surprising was that the categories given to me by the platform were not particularly accurate, but the content that I had browsed in small quantities was recorded by the platform. However, the way of platform understand me is not real me, but it can be a part of online self-presenting. To understand the process of how the algorithms processing our data, I collected 32 friends' last 15 posts from each person on Instagram with 13 categories. During the process of collecting the data, it is hard to classify each content of post should belongs to.
Task 1: To analysis the graph, most of the posts are outdoor and lifestyle, few people shared their family members online. It might be because family is reperesnting the privacy, posters doesn't want other people to know much about their personal information online. Overall, people sharing their lifestyle are creating a sense of relaxation in life that escape from the real world. From my perspective, people are likely creating a hyper-realistic real world that used to escape from real life and attract attention. Task 2: We have looked at online communities with my partners.I looked at a EXO fandom group on Weibo which is a popular idol group. There are many promotional fandom made album posts, but also have a lot of fighting posts that arguing individual idol behaviour in the group. The interactive style on Weibo is somewhat aloof and overbearing, making it difficult for new fans to quickly integrate.
